Destination Manhattan, New York, USA

Overview New York has to be one of the most talked about cities in the world. The focus of world trade, a heaven for shoppers and a focal point of entertainment. Why, even King Kong paid a visit! There's a vast array of different cultures (after all New York was the gateway to a new life for many immigrants) and a metropolis of different styles and people. The home to many artists, you'll find an artistic flavour around every corner with an offering of museums and art galleries. It's different from any other place you may have visited - where else could you find a computer controlled fountain based on wind velocity that stops passers by being caught by the spray (the Lincoln Centre for the Performing Arts) or a place that has imported some history dating back to a time before things really began in America (the Cloisters at Washington Heights)?

New York was forged from five constituencies: Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx and Staten Island. You'll find roads planned on a grid system with avenues crossing north to south and streets east to west. With such a vast area to cover it's probably best to stick to one area for a few days and plan a return trip.

Shopping Manhattan is the jewel in the crown here and 5th Avenue its sparkle. Manhattan Island is formed between the the Hudson River and East River and is divided in two by 5th Avenue. If you can't find what you're looking fore here then they say it isn't for sale. Why? Because New York sells just about anything and everything. You'll find Tiffanys, the Rockefeller Center and Macys, the biggest department store in the world, waiting to greet you. Along with the chain stores you'll enjoy some of the smaller specialist boutiques and in Avenue A and East 11th Street flea markets and street fairs sell all sorts of goods. Major credit cards are accepted by most shops and restaurants. Most department stores open 10am-6pm Monday to Saturday with evening hours on Thursdays. The best months for sales are February and August as well as just after Christmas.
Sights If its the Empire State Building you're after then go early to avoid the crowds. The Statue of Liberty is equally popular and those who are fit can climb the ascent for magnificent views. If you have any health problems or it's hot just enjoy a walk around this famous gift from France. Times Square comes alive with lights at night and Central Park offers a haven away from the madding crowd.
Entertainment New York is awash with museums and here are a few ideas. The American Museum of Natural History is great for children with enough for parents to enjoy too - a 34 ton meteorite, the largest blue sapphire in the world, the tallest dinosaur in the world, a full scale model of a blue whale and some fun interactive computer systems. The Museum Mile offers art, design, history and natural history. For those missing London there's Madame Tussauds wax museum. Of course, Times Square offers the best when it comes to a Broadway Show so book your tickets early.
Getting Around You'll find subways, buses and taxis criss-cross the city although New York is pedestrian friendly. Subway journeys cost $1.50 on any jorney no matter how far you are travelling and you can purchase passes valid for 1, 7 or 30 days. If you're travelling from an airport the recommended option is a private bus at around $15 from JFK and a little more from La Guardia or Newark. From Newark New Jersey Transit buses will take you to Port Authority Bus terminal at Eigth Ave and 41st St, Manhattan. Olympia Trails Coach service run services to Penn Station and Grand Central Terminal, Manhattan.
A minibus service runs to most major hotels and is provided by Gray Line Air Shuttle (tel. 1-800-451-0455) for approx $14. Super Shuttle Blue Vans (tel.1-800-258-3826) offer a door to door service for $14-$17.
Places to Unwind Try a horse and carriage ride through Central Park or the Peninsula Hotel, 700 5th Avenue. Here there's a roof top bar where you can have a drink and watch the world pass by below you.
